It's horrifying that someone else has the right to override our wishes, or has the right to make these kinds of life-defining and life-altering decisions for us. I had no idea what some women go through just to get a tubal ligation. This is worth a listen.
I, too, always knew - from the age of 5 - that I didn't want to have children. I never considered getting my tubes tied, but I DID have a surgeon who urged me to do a uterine repair so I could get pregnant one day. (I'm a DES daughter, and was born with several congenital abnormalities - one of which is a bicornuate uterus, which makes the risk of miscarriage much higher.) When I informed him that I had no intention of ever having children, he warned me that I would change my mind some day, so I should just go ahead and have the surgery now. I was around 20 years old at the time. We had a prolonged debate about it, but I didn't back down. And in the 35 years since, I've never changed my mind...
